Prompt

Do Taiwanese people care about dressing well?

The topic of Taiwanese people's lack of fashion sense and how they rarely dress well is discussed at all times. If we do a quick search on various forums or news websites, we can find a lot of related articles (as shown in the picture).

Survey
Target users

People from 18 to 35 years old: who are generally considered to place more emphasis on fashion and are relatively willing to spend time and money on their clothing.

Research Goals
  1. Identify the issue of if Taiwanese people rarely dressing well.

Method

I posted a survey on my university's Facebook group, and the survey was divided into three main categories:

1. Participants' views on the overall dressing behavior of Taiwanese people.
2. Participants' own dressing habits and related issues.
3. Participants' opinions on a platform related to dressing.

Sample Size: 132
Age: Most are 19-24 yrs (83.3%)
Gender: Female 69%, Male 31%

What did I learn from the research?
  • 16.6% of participants always dress well when they go out.
  • 59.7% of participants don't know how to dress well.
  • 50% of participants never take pictures of their outfits.
  • 66.6% of participants don't share their outfit pictures on social media.
  • 89% of participants think they will try to use a dressing app for some reason.
  • 81% of participants hope to view or learn from others' outfits through a dressing app.

Define

Opportunity areas

I created an opportunity map to identify three kinds of potential target users, and used the HMW method to define the problem that must address.

1. How might we help them to dress more stylishly?
2. How might we increase their frequency of dressing well?

"If most people expect to learn from others' outfits through this platform, then who shares their outfits?", so

3. How might we increase their willingness to share their outfits?

Research II

After gaining a clearer understanding of the target users and the critical issues that need to be addressed, I hope to obtain further insights into the HMW questions through a second round of research.

Method

Format: Google Meet 2-hour meetings
Participant numbers: 8
Age: 22~28 yrs
Gender: 4 women and 4 men
Characteristics: Including single/in relationship, can/can't dress well

We've all been through the same things...
Scenario 2: have nice clothes but bad fashion sense
Scenario 1: always bought similar clothes

Research Synthesis

What are the user needs or pain points?

After a series of research, what did I learn from them to help my upcoming design?

Problem Statement
In Taiwan, there is no app specifically designed to facilitate people getting inspiration from others, and boosting their interest in dressing

Persona

A good design starts with a good story!

According to the three kinds of potential target users, I created personas for each of them to help me focus on designing a solution that meets their needs.

  • Wardrobe function is very practical and can prevent from buying similar clothes.
  • The community-related features are very interesting and well thought-out.
  • Being able to get discounts on clothes through the app is a great incentive to use it.
  • Some details have been thoughtfully designed, such as anonymity and positive language.

Negative

  • Not sure if the daily challenge feature is compelling enough to keep users interested.
  • The image format doesn't seem consistent on every page.

Reflection

Takeaways

In this project, I learned to better utilize research to identify the actual problems that users face, rather than relying on my own assumptions. Throughout the design process, from research to design, I focused on the core concept and user needs. I believe that approaching the design from the user's perspective helped me create a practical product.
